Most of this freshman's difficulties with math arose from relatively large gaps in his understanding of basic skills. Perhaps a victim of the "calculator generation," he too frequently reached for his calculator when performing operations on fractions, decimals, or percents.
Once-a-week meetings help reinforce basic skills and allow us time to discuss new algebra concepts. Already possessing a strong ability to think mathematically (although it took awhile before he believed in himself!), I simply come by to help with any academic "bumps in the road."
I am a freshman at South Meck. I am currently in Algebra I there. I am tutored at home once a week. And it is really helping me out. I didn't understand most of the material. When I started getting tutored I started understanding the material. My previous grade was a low C but I got an 87% on my last progress report.
I think Mr. Mayville is a really good teacher. He explains the material so well that I understand it faster than I do in my algebra class. I wish he was my math teacher. I know for sure I would understand the material. He also cares about his students.
