When seeking tutoring assistance for their child, parents are often
faced with a difficult decision: to hire a private tutor or contract
with a local learning center. However, there is no one correct solution
for all students. Private tutoring is more appropriate for students with
academic problems focused in one or two areas, whereas a learning center
is better prepared to help students with profound and/or wide-spread
learning difficulties.
Based on feedback I have received from parents who tried both approaches, most students
do NOT need the 4-5 hours of tutoring required each week by most learning center contracts.
Usually, students notice significant academic improvement with only 1-2 hours of tutoring per week.
Technological proficiency is
a critical skill for the student of the 21st century. Did you know that students are allowed to
use graphing calculators for at least parts of every End-of-Course math test, AP* exam, and SAT/ACT tests?
Having an extensive background using Ti-84 and Ti-92 calculators, I show my students how to use
technology to assist their learning and improve their test scores.
Unlike courses such as history or english, with the majority of concepts taught as independent units,
math has a curriculum that is cumulative in nature.
For example, a student could perform well on a Civil War test even if
he/she had done poorly on a Revolutionary War test, whereas one who had
failed a test covering radicals would have a slim chance of passing a test
covering applications of the Pythagorean Theorem.
Because previous performance in math has such a profound effect on future
success, it is imperative to secure tutoring assistance
before the task of academic recovery becomes virtually insurmountable.

Some learning centers offer test-preparation programs designed for the masses. Usually
students meet in groups, getting little one-on-one interaction, and do not receive a customized
program based on their needs. Much time and effort is wasted on materials that the student
doesn't need help with, while weaknesses are insufficiently addressed.
Out of necessity, large learning centers must write preparation materials
based on what the average student needs to review.
With individualized, one-on-one guidance, I can help students in a much more effective and efficient
manner...plus you don't have to drive anywhere! Call me now at (704) 451-9998 to jump-start your test-preparation
process for the following exams:
- SAT
- ACT
- GRE
- FE
- AP* Psychology
- AP* Calculus
- AP* Statistics
- College placement
- EPPP test
SAT and ACT exam reviews are a classic example of a "one size fits all" approach to exam preparation.
Typically, students sit in a classroom and perform "drill and kill" exercises. That is, they are
given a standardized review sheet with countless review problems. Little time or attention is given
to the student's particular needs.
While exposure to an extensive list of practice problems is important for improving
one's SAT/ACT scores, there are vastly more efficient means of achieving the same improvement. Most
of my students require four to eight (4-8) 1-hour sessions to see a significant increase to their
math score.
Scoring well on an AP* exam gives a student college credit for that course. This results in
considerable savings in terms of tuition dollars. Think about it...spending a little money now on
tutoring can save the thousands of dollars it would cost for your child to repeat the course in college!
Just practicing homework problems is not sufficient for success on these tests. Many AP*
questions are designed to access a student's understanding of calculus theories. Too often homework problems
merely address mechanical skills needed to perform calculus, while insufficiently addressing more abstract theoretical
concerns. Let the Charlotte Math Tutor help you rewrite theorems into meaningful "every-day" English so that they
actually make sense (this helps with long-term retention, too!).
Are you scheduled to take a professional exam that has a math component? Let the Charlotte Math Tutor help you to improve your
score. Review the neccessary math concepts in a low-pressure atmosphere, and watch your confidence and competence grow!
